The Subject Area Board initiates revisions and introductions of new doctoral study programs. The board authorises new applicants for study at theme frameworks and authorises topics of dissertations and its supervisors. The board's objective is to control and evaluate ongoing doctoral studies of students, approve individual study plans and their revisions and supervisor-specialists. The board is responsible for establishing commissions for state doctoral examination and dissertation defence sessions; the council also authorises opponents of dissertations.
